One Computer Classroom
I saw a suggestion to google 'one computer classroom' which was an interesting idea since I only have one computer in my classroom. I found some new ideas and suggestions, however most of the links I found were no longer available or would not open properly. However, the ones that I was able to read were similar to each other. They suggested having students share the one computer in small groups and have different jobs or roles (typer, mouse controller, etc.). I don't know how well this would work with sixth graders, but it is worth a try. Also, they suggested having students print off material once they found it and read through it on their own at the desk so someone else could then use the one computer. This idea makes sense and would save student time on the computer, but I would also add to this suggestion to use paper that was alread printed on the other side. It would be a huge waste of paper to have students printing off tons of articles. The website said it was cheaper than buying another computer, but it is probably worse for the environment. Other suggestions included - having a schedule for students to follow to use to computer, connecting the computer to a larger screen or television, and using the computer as one station in a set of centers. All of the suggestions were helpful in some way and it was interesting to see the different ways to manage and gain the most from only having one computer in the classroom.

I'm having second thoughts about "The One Computer Classroom". This was the title of a 2002? book so information linked to the book is woefully out of date, hence the broken links. Thanks for calling the broken links to my attention.
ReplyDeleteMy 4th graders wouldn't do well at all with the sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI admit that I am technologically ignorant, but I know enough to know that one computer in the classroom is not enough! If a lot of our teaching is going to revolve around the computer, one is difficult.I know where I have worked and the districts have had a lot of money where there was more than one computer in the room, but does you school have a computer lab that you can sign up for and maybe go once a week? I like the idea of reusing paper. I am not as green as I should be, but somethings are just common sense! RIGHT? I have worked with middle schoolers before and I think sharing depends on the individuals! :):):)
